    Garisms: Gar’s Quips

    More funny quips from Gar.
    1. Touch Wood!
    Gar: mummy die mummy die
    Me and hubby: What?!
    Gar: mummy die, mummy die
Seconds later… We figured he was saying mummy drive. I was driving the car instead of my husband.

    2. Foul Language
    Gar: Mummy f@&$ mummy f@&$
Me thinking: what?? Since when did anyone use bad words in front of him?
It turned out I was parking my car then and he was saying ‘park’.

    3. Confused Boy
    Gar: Mummy Pa Mummy Pa
    Who are you calling?
Park.. Oh, I was parking the car then!

    4. Counting Dracula
Yeye: how many steps are there? (pointing to a flight of stairs)
    Gar: One!
    Yeye: No! Let’s count. One…
Gar: one, two, three … Eight, nine, ten!
Yeye: what happened to the numbers in between? Let’s try again.
Gar: One, two, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, ten!
    Yeye: what about seven?
Gar: one, two, three, four, five, six, bear, eight, nine, ten!

    Remember his very efficient speech?
I guess the bear swallowed the number seven.

    5. Yucky bread
    Gar: Bread! Bread!
There was no white bread left, and only charcoal bread. It was black in colour, and frankly quite unappealing. When he saw it, he kept saying…
    Gar: Yuc(k), Yuc (k)

Garisms – Funny Quips from Gar

    1. The Little Fireman
Hubby to me: Take the air purifier to the room.

Immediately, Gareth came running to the room with his fireman’s helmut. He heard ‘Fire’.

    2. The Big Issue
    Auntie: Ah Ma
    Gar: Big!
    Auntie: Ah Gong?
    Gar: Small
    Auntie: Auntie?
    Gar: Small
    Auntie: Yeye?
    Gar: Small
    Auntie: Mama?
    Gar: Small
    Auntie: Gar?
    Gar: Small
    Auntie: Ah ma, small?
    Gar: Big!

    3. Going Out
I was taking El out to a play. Gar heard the word ‘out’ and immediately went to the shoe rack to show he was getting ready to go out.

    4. Wet T-shirts
The moment Gar’s shirt or pants is wet, he will take them off immediately. That usually happens when water splashes onto him while he is brushing his teeth, or someone with wet hands tries to carry him. He will say, “Wet, wet!”
He was very upset when his favourite pillow case with lions was in the wash. To calm him down, I had to say “wet, wet” before he reluctantly accepted it.

    5. Gar’s Very Efficient Speech I
Gar has trouble catching every word we say, so sometimes he will say the first word and the last word, or sometimes the first syllable and the last syllable.
We were putting stickers of baby animals on a book, and he had placed a sticker upside down.
    Me: It’s upside down.
    Gar: Up – Down
    Me: No, it’s up-side-down.
    Gar: Up – Down… Side!

    6. Gar’s Very Efficient Speech II
    Me: Elephant
    Gar: El -phant

    7. Gar wants to watch Qiaohu
Qiaohu is a Taiwanese children’s show to teach Mandarin and other growing up tips, a little like Sesame Street and Barney. Qiaohu is a tiger who is in preschool. Gar likes to watch it after we introduced to him recently. We watch it on our Smart TV usually, so when he wants to watch, he will take the remote control to me, and do the weight lifting hand signal, which stands for Timothy Tiger. He also tries to say Qiaohu, but it usually comes out as Xiaohu, which means little tiger.

One of the songs is ‘Wei Xian (Danger), Wei Xian, Stop!’, accompanied by hand actions – X for Wei Xian, and two hands reaching forward with palms at right angles up. He has also done that action to tell me to switch on the TV.

Now we just keep singing that song when he tries to do something dangerous.

  • Reading To Gar At Night

    Reading To Gar At Night

I had been the lazy mum when it came to Gar, so starting from July, I decided to make a more conscious effort to read to him. Now that he is able to say a few more words, I feel that he is more interested in books now.

We borrow a lot of books from the nearby library, and he enjoys reading them. Sometimes he chooses the books himself.

    reading at the library

I had read Pipi Gou (Dog) to Gar recently. I love these books as the dog is 2 years old too, and is facing similar issues, such as toilet training, riding a bike, fear of strangers, eating and so on. They were useful to El when he was younger. I managed to buy them at $1 per book at the bus interchange from a vendor from China. Unfortunately, I have not seen him in years.

Other new books that I had bought are bilingual books with cartoon characters, such as Plane and Monster Inc. I read the Mandarin version to him, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

A book I had just read to him today was a non-fiction book on Sabre-Tooth Tigers, although the title was Sabre-Tooth Cat. He enjoyed it very much and asked me to read it twice. He even pointed to his tiger costume in the cupboard.

He enjoys reading Eric Carle. I had met a book vendor when I was pregnant with El, and he introduced many good children’s books to me.

    reading with gar

Sometimes, after reading the books, I will play with foam letters. Gar is able to recognise most of the letters, and he knows the phonic sounds too as I use zoophonics to teach him. The foam letters are more tactile, so I do word blend with him. He will try to match the sounds to the zoophonics alphabet chart when I pass him the letters. I have been trying to spell his name, and hope he can recognise his own name.

Now that he is slightly more verbal, I am getting him to repeat the words after me as I read the book to him. He is doing a good job so far.

I must also thank my helper who reads to him frequently.
